2010 is election year !

U.K. Parliamentary general election will be held sometime in June. Every citizen should have now registered to vote. Citizenship emphasises individual freedoms of speech, thought and faith and including rights to property, contract and justice. Then political citizenship is concerned with the right to participate in political activities, and social citizenship is concerned with the right to security and welfare. These three focus on citizenship rights.(Lambert .D & Machan .P. 2001 Citizenship through Secondary Goegraphy ).

Eligibility to vote: any one who is a citizen of the U.K , The Republic of Ireland, or of a commonwealth countrywho is legally resident in U,K. who is 18 or pver on the date of the election is eligible to vote provided they are in the electoral register.(http://www.justice.gov.uk) (assessed 04.03.10).

According to the May 2005 general election vote turnout was 61.3%. Those who did not vote was 38.7%.( http//www.electoralcommission.org.uk/files/dms/candidates_uk_parl_Election_2007_06_26787-11604-E_N_S_W_pdf) (assessed04.03.10).

Comments on why some people don't vote

-Just voting on the grounds that you have you feel you have to ,even through none of he candidates and party offer what you want is not just ridiculous, illogical annd nonsensical.

-They don't know whom to vote for They only see peolpe on televisions.(http://uk2005.notapathetic.com//comments/1896)9written in May 2005).

My attitude concerning people who don't vote

People have to vote because it is their right to do so. However it looks like people don't have much education on why they should vote . A lot of voter education has to be carried out intensively before any voting takes place. I don't go along with people who don't vote. I urge everyone who has registered to go and vote in the June election . A lot of advertising should be done so that every body goes to vote .

  1. What about people who have lost faith in the government and want to show that by choosing not to vote?

  2. If you have lost faith in the government you show by voting in order to remove that government and replace it with the one you fill will do your wishes. Not voting does not solve your problem .Say your view through your vote.

  3. I have to confess that I do not entirely agree with your opinion in regards to whether people should or should not vote. Voting is a very personal action, and if people choose not to vote then there is invariably a reason for it. I do however agree that voting education should be enforced to a greater level of understanding and that individuals should have a better understanding before they making any voting decisions. Unfortunately, many have lost faith in our government and as they rarely act, say or do what they have stipulated or intended they will do. By voting people may believe they are supporting the government which they are against - so this could be regarded a hypocritical action. But on the other hand, they are not achieving anything as the winning/most popular governing body will still be elected regardless to absent voters. Therefore people should choose as it is a way of expressing their views, but I feel they should only express views which they can justify, which leadds us back to the arguement of educating our citizens in regards to political decisions and issues.
